As of October 2026, the cheapest native eSIM in Spain is Digi at EUR 5 a month for 25 GB. Movistar, Vodafone and Orange prepaid eSIMs cost EUR 10 every 28 days, which is 13 payments a year. Holafly is the only travel eSIM whose price was re-confirmed: EUR 22.90 for 7 days or EUR 61.90 for 30 days, unlimited data. No travel eSIM can receive the SMS codes Spanish banks and Cl@ve send; Orange Holiday (EUR 25 for 15 days, EUR 35 for 28 days) is the exception, because it includes a Spanish number.

What Are the Best eSIM Providers for Spain in 2026?

Six plans are ranked below: four native operator eSIMs with prices re-checked on each operator's page on 2026-10-26, and two travel eSIMs (Airalo, Ubigi) shown at their July 2026 prices, which were not re-confirmed and are left out of the price sort. Holafly, the one travel eSIM with a re-confirmed price, follows the ranking. Re-rank with the controls below, or show only the plans that match what you need.

  • Multi-country EU coverage

How Should You Choose the Right eSIM for Spain?

The right eSIM depends on your stay length, data usage, and whether you need a Spanish phone number. Use this decision framework.

  • Up to a week, data only?Holafly at EUR 22.90 for 7 days, unlimited data, no store visit. Airalo sells smaller packs, but its price was not re-confirmed.
  • Need bank or Cl@ve SMS codes?Orange Holiday (EUR 25 for 15 days, EUR 35 for 28 days) or any Spanish prepaid line. A travel eSIM cannot receive them.
  • Moving to Spain permanently?Digi at EUR 5 a month, or a Movistar, Vodafone or Orange prepaid eSIM at EUR 10 every 28 days. Each comes with a Spanish number.
  • Need the widest rural coverage?Movistar, which leads on rural and interior coverage in the Opensignal data the research summarised (B).
  • Crossing several EU countries?A Spanish operator eSIM carries EU roaming. Ubigi and Airalo Europe sell multi-country data packs, at July 2026 prices not re-confirmed.

Can a Travel eSIM Receive Spanish Bank and Cl@ve SMS Codes?

No. Travel eSIMs such as Holafly, Airalo and Ubigi are data-only and come without a Spanish phone number, so they cannot receive the one-time SMS codes that Spanish banks and Cl@ve send. If you will open a bank account or use government portals, you need a Spanish line from day one.

Orange Holiday is the exception. It is the only Spanish-operator prepaid product that bundles a phone number with unlimited data, plus 100 minutes:

PackPriceValidityIncludes
Orange Holiday MiniEUR 2515 daysUnlimited data, 100 minutes, phone number
Orange Holiday MaxiEUR 3528 daysUnlimited data, 100 minutes, phone number

Prices as of October 2026, read on orange.es on 2026-10-26.

For a month, Orange Holiday Maxi at EUR 35 for 28 days also costs less than Holafly at EUR 61.90 for 30 days, and it adds the Spanish number. For how Cl@ve and the digital certificate work, see Spanish digital certificate. For the full cost comparison by stay length, see eSIM vs SIM card in Spain.

What Is an eSIM and How Does It Work in Spain?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM chip built into your phone. Instead of inserting a physical card, you activate your plan by scanning a QR code or installing a carrier profile. The eSIM connects to the mobile network just like a physical SIM, but entirely digitally.

eSIM works on iPhones from 2018 on and on upper-range Android phones; any phone takes a physical SIM. With dual SIM, you can keep your home number active on one profile while using a Spanish eSIM for local data and calls.

Which Native Spanish Providers Offer eSIM?

Most Spanish operators issue eSIMs, and getting one is free at most of them. Orange charges EUR 15 to swap an existing physical SIM for an eSIM (free only on a new activation in store), Vodafone and Jazztel charge EUR 5 to existing customers, and Yoigo and MasMovil issue eSIMs only in store. Finetwork, Lemmon and Xenet did not offer eSIM when the press reports were written.

Research confidence B: press reports (Xataka Movil, ADSLZone, tarifasde, Selectra), September 2025, not confirmed on the operators' pages. Orange's EUR 15fee was last confirmed in September 2025. "-" means the research recorded no value.

What ID do you need? Ley 25/2007 makes operators identify every prepaid user, and a DNI, NIE or passport is accepted for a prepaid line. Contract plans ask for a DNI or NIE and usually a Spanish IBAN for direct debit. Digi and Simyo verify a DNI for an online eSIM, so with only a passport, buy in store.

How Does an eSIM Compare With a Physical SIM in Spain?

A native eSIM from a Spanish operator costs the same as that operator's physical SIM and gives you a Spanish number. A travel eSIM is faster to get but data-only.

What Are the Best International eSIM Providers for Spain?

International eSIM providers sell data-only plans that you buy online and install before you travel. Holafly is the only one whose Spain price was re-confirmed on its own page in October 2026: unlimited data at EUR 22.90 for 7 days or EUR 61.90 for 30 days. Airalo and Ubigi also sell Spain and multi-country EU plans, shown on this page at their July 2026 prices, not re-confirmed. None of them gives you a Spanish number.

How Does EU Roaming Work on a Spanish eSIM?

The EU's Roam Like at Homerules (Regulation (EU) 2022/612, extended to 2032) apply to travel within the EU/EEA, so native Spanish eSIMs from Movistar, Vodafone, Orange and Digi carry your Spanish allowance abroad at no extra charge. The research could not confirm the EU roaming data allowance of each prepaid plan, so check it on the operator's page before a multi-country trip.

How Do You Activate an eSIM for Spain?

  1. 1

    Step 1: Check compatibility

Confirm your phone supports eSIM. Go to Settings, then Cellular or Mobile, and look for "Add eSIM" or "Add Cellular Plan".

  2. 2

    Step 2: Choose your provider

For data only, bought online: Holafly, Airalo or Ubigi. For a Spanish phone number: Movistar, Vodafone, Orange or Digi, with a DNI, NIE or passport (Yoigo and MasMovil eSIMs are store-only).

  3. 3

Step 3: Get and scan the QR code

A travel eSIM sends the QR code by email or in its app; install it over Wi-Fi before you travel. An operator gives the QR code in store or in its app.

  4. 4

    Step 4: Activate and connect

Follow the on-screen prompts to install the eSIM profile, then switch it on as your data line.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest eSIM for Spain?

Among the prices re-confirmed in October 2026, the cheapest native eSIM is Digi 25 GB at EUR 5 a month. Movistar Prepago Plus, Vodafone Prepago S and Orange Prepago 10 each cost EUR 10 every 28 days, which is 13 payments a year. The only travel eSIM whose price was re-confirmed is Holafly, at EUR 22.90 for 7 days with unlimited data. Airalo and Ubigi are shown at their July 2026 prices, which were not re-confirmed, so this guide does not rank them as the cheapest.

Do I need a NIE to get an eSIM in Spain?

Not for prepaid. Spanish law (Ley 25/2007) makes operators identify prepaid users, and a DNI, NIE or passport is accepted for a prepaid line. Contract plans ask for a DNI or NIE and usually a Spanish IBAN for direct debit. Online eSIM sign-up can be stricter: Digi and Simyo verify a DNI in their app or website, so a store visit with your passport is the safer route at those brands.

Which Spanish operators offer eSIM?

According to press reports from September 2025 (research confidence B), Movistar, O2, Vodafone, Orange, Digi, Lowi, Simyo, Yoigo, MasMovil, Pepephone, Jazztel, Suop and Lebara offer eSIM, while Finetwork, Lemmon and Xenet did not. Getting an eSIM is free at most operators, but Orange charges EUR 15 to swap a physical SIM for an eSIM, and Yoigo and MasMovil issue eSIMs only in store.

Can a travel eSIM receive Spanish bank or Cl@ve SMS codes?

No. Travel eSIMs are data-only and come without a Spanish phone number, so they cannot receive the one-time SMS codes that Spanish banks and Cl@ve send. Orange Holiday is the exception: it includes a phone number, unlimited data and 100 minutes, at EUR 25 for 15 days (Holiday Mini) or EUR 35 for 28 days (Holiday Maxi), as of October 2026.

Is an eSIM or a Spanish SIM card better for a short trip?

For a week of data only, Holafly at EUR 22.90 for 7 days installs online with no store visit. For a month, a Spanish prepaid line costs far less: EUR 10 every 28 days for Vodafone Prepago S against EUR 61.90 for 30 days for Holafly, and Orange Holiday Maxi costs EUR 35 for 28 days with unlimited data and a phone number. A local line needs ID, and often a store visit.
