Updated July 2026. The Sistema Nacional de Salud (SNS) covers only very limited dental care for adults in Spain, mainly emergency extractions and some oral surgery, plus pediatric dental care for children up to a certain age. Routine, cosmetic, and orthodontic dental work is not covered and runs almost entirely through the private market. Sanitas, Adeslas, Asisa and DKV Seguros are the main private insurers selling dental plans in Spain, supervised by the DGSFP.

What Does the Sistema Nacional de Salud Cover for Dental Care?

The Sistema Nacional de Salud covers only a narrow set of dental treatments for adults, mainly emergency extractions and some oral surgery, alongside broader pediatric dental care for children. This is a much thinner public benefit than countries with broader statutory dental cover, and it makes Spain's dental market almost entirely a private, out-of-pocket one for adults.

What Does Private Dental Insurance Cover in Spain?

Private dental plans from Sanitas, Adeslas, Asisa and DKV Seguros typically cover the routine and cosmetic work the SNS excludes: check-ups, cleanings, fillings, and reduced-rate or included orthodontics and implants depending on the plan tier. Standalone dental plans such as Sanitas Dental and Adeslas Dental work on a cuadro dental model: covered treatment is free or discounted only at each insurer's own network of affiliated clinics, and treatment outside that network is not covered under the standard dental plan. Asisa Dental adds limited reimbursement on top of its own network, up to 1,500 EUR for dental accidents and up to 1,500 EUR for contingencies arising after orthodontics, prosthetics, or implants, per Asisa's published dental terms.

How Much Does Dental Insurance Cost in Spain?

Cost scales with the coverage tier: basic plans cover preventive care and discounted treatment, while higher tiers add orthodontics and implants at lower out-of-pocket cost. As of July 2026, individual basic plans start around 7 to 12 EUR a month (Asisa Dental, Adeslas Dental Max, Sanitas Dental Milenium with copay), with mid and premium tiers running higher, per published insurer and comparison-site pricing.

Dental Insurance in Spain: Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Sistema Nacional de Salud cover dental care in Spain?

Only in a limited way. Per the Ministerio de Sanidad's official Cartera de Servicios Comunes, the Sistema Nacional de Salud (SNS) covers oral health education, acute treatment such as infections, trauma, and oral surgery, emergency and surgical extractions, and preventive dental checks for pregnant women. Pediatric dental care is delivered through regional infant dental health programs (commonly called PADI or equivalent), which in most Comunidades Autonomas cover children up to around age 15, extending to age 18 in some regions such as Galicia, Andalucia, and Castilla y Leon. Routine care such as fillings for adults, cleanings, and orthodontics is not covered and is paid privately or through a private dental plan.

Which private insurers sell dental plans in Spain?

Sanitas, Adeslas (Segurcaixa Adeslas), Asisa, and DKV Seguros are the main private health insurers that sell standalone or bundled dental plans in Spain. As of July 2026, Sanitas Dental (Milenium and Premium tiers), Adeslas Dental (Max and Total tiers), Asisa Dental, and DKV Dentisalud (Classic and Elite) are each structured as a cuadro dental: free or discounted treatment at each insurer's own network of affiliated clinics, rather than full reimbursement insurance. Each is a real, established insurer active in the Spanish market, supervised by the DGSFP.

How much does private dental insurance cost in Spain?

As of July 2026, individual plans start from roughly 7 to 12 EUR a month for a basic tier, for example Asisa Dental from 11.80 EUR a month and Adeslas Dental Max from 10 EUR a month for one person, according to insurer and comparison-site pricing pages. Mid and premium tiers with fuller orthodontic and implant cover run higher, for example Sanitas Dental Premium from about 18.90 EUR a month with copay to 21.50 EUR a month without copay, per Sanitas Dental's published Milenium and Premium pricing. Family plans typically add a discounted rate per extra member rather than charging full price per person.

Do expats need private dental insurance in Spain?

Most expats end up with some form of private dental cover or pay out of pocket, since the Sistema Nacional de Salud covers only emergency and pediatric dental care for adults. A private plan from Sanitas, Adeslas, Asisa, or DKV Seguros is the common route for routine and cosmetic dental work.
