> Travel eSIM or Spanish SIM, October 2026: Orange Holiday beats Holafly from day 8 (EUR 25 against EUR 30.90), a local prepaid line costs EUR 10 every 28 days, and only a line with a phone number receives bank and Cl@ve SMS codes.

Comparing unlimited data with unlimited data, **Orange Holiday Mini** (EUR 25 for 15 days) is **cheaper than Holafly from day 8**, as of October 2026; up to 7 days, Holafly is cheaper at EUR 22.90. A capped local line is cheaper from day 1: **Digi 25 GB** costs **EUR 5 a month** and **Vodafone Prepago S** **EUR 10 every 28 days** for 90 GB. Over 3 months, Holafly costs EUR 185.70 against EUR 40 for Vodafone Prepago S. A travel eSIM has **no phone number**, so it cannot receive Spanish bank, Cl@ve or Seguridad Social SMS codes.

## When Does a Local SIM Get Cheaper Than a Travel eSIM?

The table prices each stay at the shortest plan that covers it, the same method as our [eSIM price research](/telecom/esim-price-research). Holafly and Orange Holiday have unlimited data; the two local lines have a data cap. All four prices were confirmed on the provider's page on 2026-10-26.

Prices as of October 2026. Holafly: unlimited data, no phone number. Orange Holiday: unlimited data, 100 minutes and a phone number. Vodafone Prepago S: 90 GB, EUR 10 every 28 days. Digi 25 GB: 25 GB, EUR 5 a month. Local lines are counted as one payment per started billing cycle.
| Stay | Holafly | Orange Holiday | Vodafone Prepago S | Digi 25 GB | Cheaper unlimited option |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 week (7 days) | EUR 22.907-day plan | EUR 25Holiday Mini, 15 days | EUR 101 x EUR 10 | EUR 51 x EUR 5 | Holafly, EUR 2.10 less |
| 10 days (10 days) | EUR 30.9010-day plan | EUR 25Holiday Mini, 15 days | EUR 101 x EUR 10 | EUR 51 x EUR 5 | Orange Holiday, EUR 5.90 less |
| 15 days (15 days) | EUR 42.5015-day plan | EUR 25Holiday Mini, 15 days | EUR 101 x EUR 10 | EUR 51 x EUR 5 | Orange Holiday, EUR 17.50 less |
| 4 weeks (28 days) | EUR 61.9030-day plan | EUR 35Holiday Maxi, 28 days | EUR 101 x EUR 10 | EUR 51 x EUR 5 | Orange Holiday, EUR 26.90 less |
| 3 months (90 days) | EUR 185.703 x EUR 61.90 (30-day plan) | Packs last at most 28 days; buying them back to back was not confirmed | EUR 404 x EUR 10 | EUR 153 x EUR 5 | Holafly is the only priced one |
**The crossover, unlimited against unlimited:** up to 7 days Holafly costs EUR 22.90 against EUR 25 for Orange Holiday Mini. From day 8, Holafly needs its 10-day plan at EUR 30.90, so Orange is EUR 5.90 cheaper (EUR 30.90 - EUR 25). At 4 weeks the gap is EUR 26.90 (EUR 61.90 - EUR 35).

**Against a capped local line, there is no crossover:** Digi 25 GB (EUR 5) and Vodafone Prepago S (EUR 10) both cost less than Holafly's shortest plan (EUR 11.42 for 3 days). What a travel eSIM buys is convenience: it is installed online before you land, with no ID check and no shop visit. Staying a year, Vodafone Prepago S costs EUR 130 (13 payments every 28 days) and Digi 25 GB EUR 60 (12 months).

Method: Holafly's six durations on its Spanish page (3 to 30 days); a stay longer than 30 days repeats the 30-day plan. How an operator bills a first part-month was not confirmed. Airalo and Ubigi are left out because their prices were not re-confirmed in October 2026.

## Can a Travel eSIM Receive Spanish Bank SMS Codes?

No. Mainstream travel eSIMs such as Holafly, Airalo, Saily, Nomad and Ubigi are **data-only**: they have no phone number, so they cannot receive the one-time SMS codes that **Spanish banks, Cl@ve and the Seguridad Social** send. If you will open a bank account or use a government portal, you need a line with a number from the start, whatever your data needs.

Lines that do have a number: any Spanish operator SIM or native eSIM, and **Orange Holiday**, which includes a phone number with its unlimited data. The research also reports one partial exception among travel eSIMs, per a secondary source: Holafly's monthly subscription adds an inbound-SMS number that is not Spanish, and the research warns that Spanish services may reject foreign numbers. For Cl@ve and the digital certificate, see [Spanish digital certificate](/living/digital-certificate).

## Which Prepaid Line Has a Phone Number and Unlimited Data?

The research reports **Orange Holiday** as the only Spanish-operator prepaid product that combines a phone number with unlimited data (research confidence B). Its two packs, as of October 2026:

Read on orange.es on 2026-10-26. Per-day cost rounded to the cent.
| Pack | Price | Validity | Per day | Includes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Orange Holiday Mini | EUR 25 | 15 days | EUR 1.67 | Unlimited data, 100 minutes, a phone number |
| Orange Holiday Maxi | EUR 35 | 28 days | EUR 1.25 | Unlimited data, 100 minutes, a phone number |
For 8 to 28 days it is the cheapest confirmed unlimited option (see the table above). If a data cap is fine, Vodafone Prepago S gives 90 GB and a number at EUR 10 every 28 days, EUR 15 less than Holiday Mini.

## How Do a Travel eSIM, a Native eSIM and a Physical SIM Compare?

A native eSIM from a Spanish operator costs the same as that operator's physical SIM and comes with a number. A travel eSIM is faster to get but data-only.

Research section 7.4, prices replaced with the confirmed ones (October 2026). Orange's EUR 15 eSIM fee is from press reports of September 2025 (research confidence B).
| Factor | Travel eSIM | Native eSIM (Spanish operator) | Physical SIM |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Activation | Minutes, before departure; needs Wi-Fi to install | QR in store at once; app flows need a verified ID | Store visit, about 30 minutes |
| Price (October 2026) | Holafly unlimited EUR 22.90 for 7 days, EUR 30.90 for 10 days | Digi 25 GB EUR 5 a month; Vodafone Prepago S EUR 10 every 28 days | Same as the native eSIM |
| Calls, SMS, bank codes | No (Orange Holiday is the exception) | Yes, with a Spanish number | Yes |
| Keep home number | Yes (dual SIM) | Yes (dual SIM) | No (swap), unless the phone has two slots |
| New phone | Reinstall via the app | New QR, usually free (Orange EUR 15) | New SIM, small fee |
| Phones | iPhones from 2018, upper-range Android | Same | Any phone |
Which operators issue eSIMs, and at what cost, is on our [eSIM guide](/telecom/esim); physical prepaid SIMs and the ID they need are on [SIM cards in Spain](/telecom/sim-cards).

## Which Option Fits Your Trip?

The research tested 10 eSIM scenarios. We kept its pick only where that option has a price confirmed in October 2026, and recomputed each comparison from those prices.

Scenarios from the research (Block 2B, section 9b); "no verified answer" means the research's pick has no confirmed price.
| Scenario | Pick | Recomputed check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Weekend in Madrid, light data use | Holafly 3 days, EUR 11.42 | Digi 25 GB at EUR 5 a month is EUR 6.42 cheaper (EUR 11.42 - EUR 5), but it needs ID and a sign-up. Holafly wins on convenience, not price. |
| 10 days in Spain and Portugal, about 10 GB | No verified answer | The research's pick is a regional travel eSIM whose price was not confirmed on the provider's page. |
| Two weeks of heavy use, no counting GB | Holafly 15 days, EUR 42.50 | Orange Holiday Mini also has unlimited data for 15 days at EUR 25: EUR 17.50 cheaper (EUR 42.50 - EUR 25), and it adds a phone number. |
| Camino de Santiago, 30 days | Orange Holiday Maxi, EUR 35 | Holiday Maxi lasts 28 days, 2 short of 30. Holafly's 30-day plan covers the whole walk at EUR 61.90; Holiday Maxi plus Holafly 3 days costs EUR 46.42 (EUR 35 + EUR 11.42), still EUR 15.48 less. |
| Must receive a Spanish bank SMS code during a 3-week stay | Orange Holiday Maxi, EUR 35 | Lobster 200 GB (eSIM available) costs EUR 12.99 every 28 days: EUR 22.01 less (EUR 35 - EUR 12.99) for 200 GB instead of unlimited data. A travel eSIM is ruled out. |
| Remote worker, 90 days, laptop tethering | No verified answer for the research's pick | Its pick, a 100 GB monthly plan, is not in our catalogue. From our confirmed rows: Lobster 200 GB costs 4 x EUR 12.99 = EUR 51.96 for 90 days, against 3 x EUR 61.90 (30-day plan) = EUR 185.70 for Holafly. |
| Repeat visitor, 3 short trips a year | No verified answer | The research's pick is an annual travel eSIM whose price was not confirmed. |
| Calls and SMS on one line around Europe | Orange Holiday, from EUR 25 | The research reports it as the only confirmed-price option with calls and SMS; its runner-up has no confirmed price. |
| eSIM-only phone, arriving on a Sunday night | Holafly, from EUR 11.42 | The research reports that only an app-installed eSIM activates with the shops closed, then a local eSIM on Monday: O2 Movil 50 GB at EUR 7 a month. Holafly 3 days plus O2 costs EUR 18.42 (EUR 11.42 + EUR 7). |
| A privacy-focused week in Barcelona | No verified answer | The research's pick has no confirmed price; on confirmed price, Holafly 7 days costs EUR 22.90. |

## Frequently Asked Questions

### When does a local SIM become cheaper than a travel eSIM in Spain?

Unlimited against unlimited, Orange Holiday Mini (EUR 25 for 15 days) is cheaper than Holafly from day 8, when Holafly needs its 10-day plan at EUR 30.90; up to 7 days Holafly costs EUR 22.90. A capped local line is cheaper from day 1: Digi 25 GB costs EUR 5 a month and Vodafone Prepago S EUR 10 every 28 days, against EUR 11.42 for Holafly's 3-day plan (prices as of October 2026).

### Do travel eSIMs work for Spanish bank SMS codes?

No. A data-only travel eSIM has no phone number, so it cannot receive the one-time SMS codes that Spanish banks, Cl@ve and the Seguridad Social send. You need a line with a number: a Spanish prepaid SIM or eSIM, or Orange Holiday.

### Is Orange Holiday worth it?

For 8 to 28 days with unlimited data, yes on price: Holiday Mini costs EUR 25 for 15 days and Holiday Maxi EUR 35 for 28 days, against EUR 42.50 and EUR 61.90 for Holafly's 15 and 30-day plans. It also includes 100 minutes and a phone number. If you can live with a data cap, Vodafone Prepago S at EUR 10 every 28 days for 90 GB costs less.

### Which eSIM includes a phone number in Spain?

Every native eSIM from a Spanish operator comes with a phone number, at the same price as the operator's physical SIM (for example Digi 25 GB, EUR 5 a month). Among short-stay products, the research reports Orange Holiday as the only operator prepaid line with a number and unlimited data.
